Place the ID on the scanner and press SCAN ID.
The ID Scanner compares the ID against 3,600 known types of government issued identification. If the ID is suspect, then a further check of 20,000 data points on the ID are analyzed to determine authenticity.
If the ID is valid, approval is given. If the ID is potentially invalid, a notification is given, and you get to decide whether to admit or deny entry to the patron.
At the same time the ID Scanner is detecting fake IDs, the individual is compared against a list of patrons who have been banned by other venues. If this person is banned, then you will be notified of why there is a ban, and you can choose to admit or deny entry into your venue.
False identification (forgeries), or fake IDs are imitations of real, government issued identification. The purpose of fake identification is to fool an authority figure into believing that they are legitimate, and are often used to participate in behavior that they otherwise would not be authorized to do, such as drive with a false license or consume alcohol while not being of legal age to do so. The supply of fake IDs have grown significantly over the past few years, as the internet has been able to connect the purchasers of fake ID with suppliers of fake identification from around the world. This has increased the risk to bars, nightclubs, pubs, liquor stores, and other venues who are obliged to prevent liquor sales to people under the legal age to purchase and consume it.
Novelty IDs are slightly different than a fake ID, they are designed to look official, but not the same as an official ID. Small changes are incorporated into the novelty ID to differentiate it from identification issued by the government, so as to allow the production and sale of this type of ID. At a glance, it may appear official, but is often easy to distinguish from an official ID in a side by side comparison. A disclaimer may also appear somewhere on the document indicating that it is not official identification.
Official ID are sometimes altered to modify the birth date of the individual, in an attempt to enter restricted venues while underage. Any ID that has been altered is no longer valid, but it may be possible to fool someone on inspection into believing the altered information on the ID card.
Of course, the major incentive for a young person to acquire a fake ID is to fool someone who sells liquor into believing that this person is of the legal age to consume alcohol. While the legal age differs based on the jurisdiction, there is always a legal age at which liquor sales are prohibited.
Civil law requires that all suppliers of alcohol to the public take satisfactory action, by way of instituting policy, training, and technology, to verify identification and prevent young people from consuming liquor. Failure to do so could result in liability falling on the licensed establishment for any of the damage caused by consuming alcohol, as well as any damage received by or caused by the young person while intoxicated.
This can open the door for very high damages, as young people often become intoxicated very quickly, and may not be able to control their action or make safe decisions while under the influence of alcohol. It is up to the liquor serving establishment to take preventative action, blaming the underage drinker has not been a successful defense in most cases.
The dramatic rise of fake ID’s has been a recent occurrence. Previously, creating a false identification required an artistic ability, specialized tools, and connections to criminal behavior. Now, young people are able to purchase fake IDs over the internet, which are usually created in China, for around $100.
With cheap and abundant supply of fake IDs, venues serving and supplying alcohol to the public need to be especially vigilant, and investigate anything suspicious. Some nightclub owners believe that as many as 50-75 underage people per night have tried to enter their club with false identification (cbc.ca, 22 Feb, 2013)
The best way to prevent yourself and your patrons from becoming victim to a youth with a fake ID is to put policies, training, and technology in place at your venue.
Training is critical for both new and existing staff. Looking for suspicious behavior is your first clue to detecting a false identification. A group of young people with identification from different jurisdictions is a clear sign that one or more of the IDs might be fake. Have security people ask for secondary pieces of ID before allowing entry. Have a second person trained to detect fake ID inspect before allowing entry. Use a black light, look for holograms, and look at the background of the image. Keep old fake ID’s and test your staff to ensure they can tell a real ID from a fake one.
Policies provide your security staff with the ability to make the right decision for the safety of all involved. Ensure that all of your staff understand that it is their responsibility to decide whether someone is legally entitled to consume alcohol. Provide all of your staff with the authority to refuse service, and to eject suspected underage patrons if they believe their ID to be a fake.
Technology is your best defense. Install an ID Scanner in a place at your venue where everyone can have their ID scanned. Often, upon noticing that an ID scanner is in use, underage people with fake ID will leave voluntarily. The best possible ID scanners will detect most fake IDs. While some of the higher quality false IDs can scan successfully, these are high quality forgeries. There is a constant state of competition between issuing bodies of identification, technology providers, and forgers in an effort to come out successful in the world of identification creation.
